Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Finally Has an Opening Date

After years of anticipation, the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi has confirmed that Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will officially open on December 11, 2026.

The museum is dedicated to modern and contemporary art, with a focus on works created from the 1960s to today. But unlike its sister museums around the world, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is being designed with a distinctly regional perspective, highlighting artistic voices from the UAE, the Middle East, and beyond alongside internationally renowned artists.

Rather than following a traditional timeline, the museum will explore themes like abstraction, storytelling, popular culture, language, and land, creating a more immersive and thought-provoking experience for visitors.

A New Icon for Saadiyat Island

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will become the latest addition to Saadiyat Cultural District, which is quickly turning into one of the world’s most impressive cultural destinations.

It will join attractions including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, giving visitors the chance to experience several globally significant museums in one destination.

A Frank Gehry Masterpiece

The building itself is expected to be as much of an attraction as the art inside.

Designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry, the museum features a dramatic collection of sculptural cones rising above the skyline. Beyond their striking appearance, they’re designed to naturally ventilate and shade the building, making the massive structure more energy efficient.

The museum will include:

• 30 galleries
• Around 11,600 square metres of indoor exhibition space
• 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas
• A total built-up area of 80,000 square metres

Once open, it will rank among the largest museum projects in the world.

More Than Just a Museum

The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has been building its permanent collection since 2009, bringing together artworks from across continents while placing a strong emphasis on artists from the region.

Visitors can expect everything from paintings and sculptures to photography, installations, film, and digital media, creating an experience that reflects how art has evolved over the past six decades.

The museum also aims to become a place for conversations, creativity, and cultural exchange, with public programs and exhibitions designed to connect people through art.
